When purchasing expensive diamonds, request the jeweller to allow you to see the diamond in the sunlight. (Most times they will accompany you while you "test" out the rock!)
Grade Exaggeration
In this scam, the jeweller may tell you that the diamond you are looking at is 1.20 carat F color / VS1 clarity for $8,000. In actual fact, if you sent it to a lab like GIA to be tested, you discover that it is actually G color / VS2 clarity, which is only worth about $5,000. There is such a difference in pricing. Again, if you are new to buying diamond jewellery, unfortunately you may not be aware of this.
Carat Scam
The jeweller tells you that this is a ¾ carat weight diamond. In actual fact, the weight is anywhere between .69 and 0.80. Sadly, you may end up paying more thing it is a 0.75 carat diamond when in actual fact it is only 0.70 carat.
